Artist's Statement

Annette Weintraub is a media artist whose projects embed layered narratives within a variety of architectural constructs. She investigates architecture as visual language, and focuses on the dynamics of urban space, the intrusion of media into public space and the symbolism of space. Her large-scale web projects integrate elements of narrative, film and architecture within a conceptual representation of space, often using sound to spacialize that structure. Her projects incorporate photo-based imagery, texts and moving images in a densely layered space that encourages simultaneous reading, hearing and seeing.

This use of narrative employs multiple story lines that intersect at random intervals to create larger narratives, and in which factual and fictive elements and a range of storytelling modes are intermixed. Working with hybridized constructs of 2D and 3D, Weintraub uses various modes of spatial representation and the subjective experience of physical space to question how our sense of place shapes behavior and is memorialized in recollection. She is currently working on a series of panoramic images, both still image and web based that use the extreme horizontal to explore the experience of moving through space and which are a reimagination of walks in the city.
